A Guide to Painting Your Boats

Wooden Boats

Preparation:

  • Remove any existing marine growth and eliminate any infestation on the surface.
  • Ensure wood is dry (moisture content must be below 12 – 15% to avoid micro blistering)
  • Clean, Degrease and sand the surface with 150 grit sandpaper to create an even clean surface to paint.
  • Make sure all knots in the wood are sealed and any damage, rot is treated with Knotting Marine Filler or replace wood is necessary.

For any previous coatings – Remove any loose flaky material, clean, and degrease the surface and abrade and spot prime any bare substrate.

 

GRP Boats

Preparation:

  • Sand the surface, for under water use a course, wet or dry 120 grip and for topside use a 220 grit and finish off with a 400-grit sandpaper.
  • Dust off and ensure the surface is clean, thoroughly degreased and the surface is free from moisture or mould release.
  • Ensure wood is dry (moisture content must be below 12 – 15% to avoid micro blistering)
  • Check all joints are sound and repair if necessary.

Aluminium Boats

Preparation:

  • Degrease the surface with an appropriate degreaser and wipe clean with clean rags.
  • To remove oxidisation on the surface either lightly abrade the surface or treat it with Mordant Solution
  • Once treated dry the surface and prime it immediately.

Preparation:

  • Clean all steel work with the appropriate degreaser and wipe clean with clean rags.
  • Rust and millscale must be removed by hand tool to ST2 or preferably by shot blasting to Sa2½. (please refer to ISO 8501-1:1988)
